According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics the top ten percent of licensed practical nurses brought home more than $46,000 in 2004. However, the bottom ten percent earned less than $25,000. The middle number or median is the number to focus on, which for LPNs was about $34,000 in May 2004. If you are an LPN and you enjoy your job and the amount of money you are earning, good for you. You perform a much needed and appreciated service to your community.

If however you have higher career ambitions and you would like the potential to earn more money, then you may want to consider taking a logical next step to advance your nursing career, which is earning your Bachelor of Science in Nursing Degree or BSN degree.

That means the median RN earns more then the highest paid (top 10%) licensed practical nurses. Once a current licensed LPN earns their BSN and becomes an RN, there is a good chance they could earn significantly more than the average RNs if they are in the upper percentages. For example, from the same 2004 numbers from the BLS, the top 10% of RNs earned nearly $75,000 per year. Now keep in mind there are many different factors involved in a person’s income and we are not claiming anyone will make a certain amount of money just by earning their BSN degree. However, knowing that it is possible to significantly increase your earnings by going from a licensed LPN to an RN with a BSN degree in nursing is pretty exciting.

If you are ready to make the commitment, know that moving from an LPN to a BSN will require some hard work. You will need to study and focus to make your dreams of being an RN a reality.
